Day 6 - Human Connection
Fair play if you are a monk, but I couldn’t do it. I’m only on Day 6 of quarantine and I’m really missing human connection.
I once had a disagreement with someone at Chicago Airport – they were arguing that you could get rid of maths teachers, and replace them with the Khan Academy. I happen to love the Khan Academy, but argued that it wouldn’t work because the social element is such a big part of learning and schooling.
Leadership itself is fundamentally about engaging with people.
It’s easier when you can move around! MBWA (Management By Walking Around) was something I was always a fan of, but I could have done it more. When you engage with people they tell you things and you can sort out problems when they are small, before they grow out of hand.
You build connection, relationships, trust and influence.
I’m just sorry that some schools who are working remotely, are missing the opportunity to have 1-1 regular (3 times a week?) check ins with staff via Zoom/phone, rather than just group Zoom meetings which just do not have the same effect.
